Recommendations for the medical management of hemiplegia and cerebral palsy

The general health and nutritional status of a child with hemiplegia or cerebral palsy must be maintained to maximise the potential of the child, such as managing associated medical conditions, evaluating feeding difficulties and dietary management.

All children with cerebral palsy must be provided with visual, hearing and developmental assessments which requires additional team input from speech and occupational therapists and psychologists.

Botulinum toxin is useful in relieving muscle spasticity and there is now substantial evidence from open-label trials and clinical practice to suggest this is a useful alternative to oral antispasticity medication.
