Primary Years Family Day
Date: Saturday 22nd October
Location: Maryhill Burgh Halls, 10-24 Gairbraid Avenue, Glasgow, G20 8YE
This new event is aimed at parents/carers of children with hemiplegia aged 4-10 years. The day includes an informal conference for parents/carers and a fun Lego workshop for children and their siblings.*
The event is FREE OF CHARGE
The morning will focus on your child’s time at Primary School. We will look at the physical barriers and unseen effects of hemiplegia, giving practical information, strategies and tips that can be passed on to your child’s teachers. This will give you both a better understanding of hemiplegia and the issues your child might face.
The second session will give a helpful overview of planning the transition from Primary School to Secondary School.
The afternoon session will look at the emotional aspects of growing up with hemiplegia. “Letter to my younger self” will be presented by two very different adults with the condition who will read personal letters offering reassurance and advice to their younger self. Siobhan McMahon is currently a Scottish Member of Parliament, a Patron of HemiHelp and is about to face motherhood for the first time. Rachel Haine is HemiHelp’s very own Office Administrator. Siobhan’s father, Michael, will also share his journey from a parents’ perspective.
We are also delighted to welcome Professor Lisa Marks Woolfson, who will look at the frequently asked question of whether your child’s behaviour is down to hemiplegia or their age. Lisa will look at different perspectives that will help you understand your child’s behaviour and give examples of practical strategies and tips to use.
* The children’s workshop is with Bricks4Kidz. Bricks 4 Kidz® workshops build on the universal popularity of LEGO® Bricks to deliver high quality, educational play. The workshop will be a fun, enriching experience for your child, using the classic bricks loved by generations of children. The workshops will involve team play and will be tailored to suit children with hemiplegia and their siblings. If you feel that your child(ren) will not settle in the workshop without a familiar adult in the room, then wherever possible, please bring along a family member/friend to care for your child so that you can concentrate on the conference without interruption.
Children aged 4 must be accompanied by an adult in any case.
Please note that the workshop is for children aged 4-10 years only. We are sorry, but we cannot accommodate any activities for any other age group at this event.
